Kirk Nielsen

Kirk Nielsen is an independent journalist and writer based in Miami. Over the past decade, he spent much time chronicling activities of major spies, terrorists, politicians, and other demagogues embroiled in U.S.-Cuba relations. He’s tracked presidential and congressional candidates in southern Florida and documented deeds, misdeeds, and high-rise condo crazes of select members of the region’s political and business elite. In late 2007 and early 2008, with support from The Nation Institute, he collaborated with journalist Tristram Korten and Salon editor Mark Schone on "The 'coddled' terrorists of South Florida," a comprehensive update on the impunity enjoyed by anti-communist activists living in Miami. In 2002, Nielsen and colleagues at Miami New Times won the John Bartlow Martin Award for Public Interest Magazine Journalism for a series on poverty in greater Miami in 2002. In the 1990s, Nielsen filed radio and print reportage from all over the Caribbean region and southern United States for Monitor Radio and the Christian Science Monitor. More recently his articles have appeared in Miller-McCune, Salon, the Progressive, Poder, and the Village Voice. You can find an archive of his articles at Nielsen Readings.
